Stretching along the Cairns waterfront, the Esplanade Lagoon is a 4,800-square-metre saltwater swimming facility that gives locals and visitors a safe, stinger-free alternative to the tropical sea. Lifeguards patrol during operating hours, and the surrounding parkland offers shaded lawns, fitness stations, barbecues, and a children's playground right on the edge of Trinity Inlet.

The lagoon was built to solve a real problem: the shallow mudflats and seasonal marine stingers of Trinity Inlet make ocean swimming impractical for most of the year. Opened in 2003, it quickly became the social hub of Cairns, drawing early-morning lap swimmers, families on weekends, and backpackers looking for a free afternoon out.

Facilities are generous: change rooms, coin lockers, outdoor showers, and ample parking along the Esplanade. The foreshore path stretches for several kilometres and is busy with joggers, cyclists, and cafe-hoppers morning and evening. Restaurants and cafes on Shields Street and Spence Street are a short walk inland.

The lagoon closes Wednesday mornings until noon for routine maintenance, so plan accordingly. Outside that window it is open every day of the year, making it one of Cairns' most accessible and consistently popular free attractions.
