Cataract Gorge Reserve

The reserve has two main trail options: the clifftop Zig Zag Track, which rewards walkers with sweeping views over the basin, and the flatter but equally scenic First Basin Circuit. Both tracks take around 45 minutes to complete and are suitable for most fitness levels. The full gorge walk to Second Basin is more demanding and follows the river through wilder, rockier terrain.

The Gorge Scenic Chairlift spans 308 metres in a single uninterrupted run, making it the longest single-span chairlift in the world. It carries passengers across the gorge for a birds-eye view of the cliffs and the glittering pool below. The chairlift operates every day of the year and tickets are purchased at the on-site office near the West Launceston entry.

Facilities at First Basin include a kiosk, the Alexandra Suspension Bridge, a large outdoor swimming pool open in summer, and picnic areas with barbecues. Sunset visits in warmer months are particularly popular, when the cliffs glow orange and the peacocks retire to the trees.
