Conspicuous Cliff
Limestone heights, wild ocean
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Conspicuous Cliff stands above the Southern Ocean inside Walpole-Nornalup National Park, about 13 kilometres east of Walpole. A short walk from the car park leads to a boardwalk and accessible lookout platform perched high on limestone bluffs, with views across a remote surf beach and the surrounding Walpole Wilderness Area. The site is one of only a few points near Walpole accessible by two-wheel-drive vehicle.
The cliff face drops dramatically to a wide, desolate beach where large Southern Ocean swells pound the shore year-round. Swimming is not recommended due to strong rips and currents, but the beach is popular for beach fishing and shell collecting. The Bibbulmun Track day walk south from Conspicuous Beach to Rame Head Campsite covers 6.6 kilometres return through coastal heath.
Between July and October the lookout is one of the south coast's best onshore whale-watching spots, with humpback and southern right whales commonly seen migrating close to shore. Red flowering gum trees around the site bloom in summer, adding a burst of colour to the coastal heath landscape. Accessible toilets are located near the car park along a sealed path.
