Eden Whale Watching Cruise
Humpbacks off Twofold Bay
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Twofold Bay, the third-deepest natural harbour in the southern hemisphere, funnels migrating humpback whales within minutes of Eden's wharf, making it one of the most accessible whale watching destinations on the east coast. From late August through November, large catamaran cruises depart daily and almost guarantee close encounters with the great whales on their southern migration.
Local operators run a large powered catamaran with multiple outdoor decks, departing from Eden Wharf. Cruises run approximately two hours and cover the rich feeding grounds just outside the harbour mouth. A free return cruise is generally guaranteed if no whales are sighted.
The season stretches from May to November, with daily departures during the southern migration peak from August onwards. Humpbacks are the main event but bottlenose dolphins, Australian fur seals, and seabirds are regular companions. The Eden Whale Festival, typically held in early October, adds live music, markets, and shoreside events.
Eden's position at the southern end of Twofold Bay means the whales pass very close inshore, and the backdrop of forested headlands and red-rock coastline makes the setting especially memorable for photographers.
