Australia's first floating wood-fired sauna bobs on the still waters of Lake Derby, the scenic freshwater body formed in the flooded crater of the Briseis open-cut tin mine. Visitors alternate between the cedar-lined sauna, which seats up to ten people, and a bracing cold plunge directly off the pontoon into the deep, crystal-clear lake. The ten-minute walk through bush from the Derby trailhead car park is part of the experience.
The Floating Sauna Lake Derby offers one-hour sessions bookable online, with both shared public sessions and private bookings available for groups. At $45 per person, the experience includes the wood-fired sauna stoke, an attendant who manages the fire and provides a 15-minute heads-up before the session ends, and direct access to the lake for cold-water immersion. Towels, water and a change of clothes should be brought from town, as the facility is entirely off-grid with no power or amenities on site.
Set against a backdrop of forested ridgelines and the mirror-flat water of Lake Derby, the sauna has become one of north-east Tasmania's most talked-about wellness experiences. The lake sits at the site of the Briseis Mine, the flooded open cut that once yielded more than 120 tonnes of tin per month, lending the setting a quiet, layered significance.
