Granite Island and Victor Harbor Horse-Drawn Tram
History rides across the causeway
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
A granite outcrop connected to the Victor Harbor foreshore by a timber causeway, Granite Island is reached by one of the world's last remaining horse-drawn trams, operating since 1894. The island offers a 2.9-kilometre walking trail, sweeping views of Encounter Bay, little penguin habitat, and reliable whale-watching from May to October.
The Victor Harbor Horse-Drawn Tram departs from the corner of Esplanade and Flinders Parade and hauls open-sided carriages across the causeway every day except Christmas Day. The short crossing is the centrepiece of a visit, but the island rewards those who stay on foot. The Kaiki Trail loops the rocky headland past unusual granite formations, wild surf, and lookouts spanning the full arc of Encounter Bay.
From May to October, southern right whales and humpbacks pass within easy viewing distance of the island's southern cliffs, making it one of the most accessible whale-watching spots on the Fleurieu Peninsula. At dusk, guided tours lead small groups to the little penguin colony, which nests among the granite boulders on the northern shore.
Boat tours depart daily from the causeway for seal colony visits and dolphin watching on the water. Admission to the island itself and the walking trails is free; fees apply for the tram crossing and wildlife tours separately.
