The Hahndorf Academy is a free public art gallery and regional heritage museum housed in one of the oldest purpose-built school buildings in South Australia, dating to 1857. It is one of the most visited galleries in South Australia, presenting rotating contemporary exhibitions by local and regional artists alongside a permanent museum collection that tells the story of Hahndorf's Peramangk First Nations custodians, its German Lutheran founders, and the evolution of village life through the nineteenth century. Entry to both the gallery and museum is free.
Three gallery spaces on the ground floor rotate contemporary exhibitions throughout the year, with a strong emphasis on South Australian painters, ceramicists, printmakers, and jewellers. The Academy also hosts the prestigious Heysen Prize for Landscape, one of Australia's leading plein-air painting awards, which draws entries from across the country and is exhibited annually on the premises.
The heritage museum on the upper level is a considered and respectful account of the layered histories of the Hahndorf region. Displays cover Peramangk Country before European contact, the 1838 to 1839 voyage of the ships that brought the first German settlers, and the material culture of the early colonial village, including tools, clothing, documents, and domestic objects. A dedicated display features original drawings by Sir Hans Heysen. Hands-on pottery workshops and art classes run regularly for visitors of all ages.
