Hamilton Island
The Largest Inhabited Island in the Whitsundays
On the lands of the Ngaro people.

The only inhabited Whitsunday island with its own commercial airport, and the easiest way to get into the reef without a long boat transfer. Hamilton Island is part resort, part private-operated island, with direct jet flights from mainland cities.
Hamilton Island is 5 square kilometres of mostly bush with resorts clustered around Catseye Beach and the marina. It is unusual among Australian islands in being owned and operated by a single private company (Hamilton Island Enterprises, controlled by the Oatley family of Rosemount Wines fame) rather than being a national park.
The island has the only commercial jet airport in the Whitsundays, which means visitors can fly directly from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Cairns and be on the beach within 20 minutes of landing. From Hamilton Island, day cruises to Whitehaven Beach and the outer Great Barrier Reef are all under 90 minutes each way.
The island offers a range of accommodation from high-end luxury lodges (regularly named among the best hotels in the world) down to standard apartment-style properties. There are no private cars on the island (visitors use golf buggies), and all the main beaches, pools, bushwalks, and the One Tree Hill sunset lookout are free to access.
