Home Hill is the former residence of Joseph Lyons, Australia's 10th Prime Minister, and Dame Enid Lyons, the first woman elected to the Australian House of Representatives. Built in 1916 and extended over the following decades to house their eleven surviving children, this handsome Federation-era home in central Devonport is now a National Trust house museum. Guided tours reveal the remarkable personal and political story of a family that shaped twentieth-century Australia.
The house reflects the Lyons family's rise from modest Tasmanian roots to the highest offices in the land. Joseph Lyons served as both Tasmanian Premier from 1923 to 1928 and Australian Prime Minister from 1932 to 1939, and the home bears the marks of those years through furnishings, personal effects, and memorabilia that speak to a busy political household far from Canberra. Dame Enid continued to live at Home Hill until her death in 1981, and the property retains an intimate, lived-in quality rare in Australian heritage museums.
Guided tours run Wednesday through Saturday and last approximately one hour. Bookings are preferred via the National Trust Tasmania website. The property sits within a short drive of the Spirit of Tasmania ferry terminal, making it a natural first or last stop for travellers arriving by sea. The surrounding gardens are well maintained and offer a quiet counterpoint to the historical intensity of the house itself. Home Hill is closed July and August and on major public holidays.
