Kalarranga Lookout
Panoramic views over the amphitheatre

Kalarranga Lookout sits just 1.5 km return from the Palm Valley carpark and offers one of the most rewarding short walks in Central Australia, climbing a sandstone staircase to a platform that gazes out over the sculpted rock amphitheatre below. The walk is graded easy and typically takes 45 minutes return, making it suitable for families with children. It is confirmed open as of 2026 as part of the fully operational Finke Gorge National Park trail network.
The Kalarranga Lookout trail follows a clear path from the carpark area, ascending via a series of natural and cut sandstone steps up the outer wall of an ancient gorge. At the summit, walkers are rewarded with a 180-degree panorama across the natural amphitheatre, a semicircle of sculpted sandstone cliffs that were shaped by a now-extinct meander of Palm Creek. Red cabbage palms are visible far below, and on clear days the views extend deep into the surrounding Krichauff Range.
The lookout is best visited in the early morning when the low sun sets the red cliffs alight, or in the late afternoon for golden-hour photography. The trail surface can be slippery after rain, and sturdy closed footwear is recommended. The lookout is typically combined with at least one other valley walk on the same day visit. Note that high-clearance 4WD access is required to reach the trailhead, and an NT Parks Visitor Pass is needed to enter the park.
