Katherine Hot Springs
Free thermal pools in town
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Katherine Hot Springs is a series of natural thermal pools set along the shaded banks of the Katherine River, just a short drive south of the town centre. The spring water bubbles up at a constant 25 to 30 degrees Celsius year-round, channelled through interconnected pools surrounded by paperbark and ghost gum trees. Entry is completely free, making it one of the best-value swimming spots in the Northern Territory.
The pools sit off Riverbank Drive in Katherine South, accessed by a sealed ten-minute walking path from the car park. Facilities include picnic tables, public toilets, barbecues, and a wheelchair-accessible ramp into the water. A seasonal cafe operates on-site during the dry months. The gentle current and warm water make it a relaxing spot for soaking tired muscles after a day of sightseeing.
Because the pools are on the edge of the Katherine River floodplain, swimming is restricted during the wet season, generally October through April, when water levels rise and saltwater crocodile risks increase. The dry-season months from May to September offer calm, clear conditions perfect for a leisurely float. Early morning visits are recommended to avoid the midday heat and weekend crowds.
Katherine Hot Springs is an easy starting or finishing point for a broader tour of the Katherine region, with Nitmiluk Gorge about 30 minutes north-east and Cutta Cutta Caves about 30 minutes south. The town centre's shops and restaurants are just minutes away.
