Spread across a gentle volcanic basin eight kilometres west of Orange's city centre, Lake Canobolas Reserve is the region's most popular all-ages outdoor escape. A calm freshwater lake, shaded picnic lawns, barbecue facilities, a heritage pumphouse, and an adventure playground combine to make this the ideal spot for a relaxed half-day out.
The walking track circling the lake is flat and family-friendly, passing through stands of eucalyptus and offering views across the water to the hills beyond. Cycling, canoeing, sailing, and dragon boating are all permitted, and the on-site lakeside kiosk provides refreshments when you need a break.
A sandy beach on the western bank is popular with children during warmer months, though visitors should check current blue-green algae alerts before swimming, as warnings are sometimes issued. Dogs are welcome on a lead.
The restored Old Pumphouse is a charming piece of local history dating from the town's early water supply days and makes for an easy detour on the lakeside walk.
