Lake Wendouree is a picturesque shallow urban lake at the heart of Ballarat, ringed by a 6-kilometre walking and cycling track and framed by historic boathouses, grand homes, and the Botanical Gardens. Renowned as the venue for rowing events at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, it remains a living sporting and recreational hub where locals and visitors walk, cycle, fish, sail, and watch wetland birds throughout the year.

The lake was created as a water reservoir in the 1850s and has since become the social centrepiece of Ballarat. The flat sealed circuit around its perimeter is accessible to walkers, joggers, cyclists, and wheelchair users, and takes roughly 60 to 90 minutes to complete at a relaxed pace. Dozens of species of waterbirds, including black swans, pelicans, and numerous duck species, make the lake their home and can be observed from multiple points around the shore.

Historic boathouses line the northern edge and rowing clubs use the regatta course for training and competition year-round. Sailing is also a regular sight on the water. The eastern shore connects seamlessly with the Ballarat Botanical Gardens, while playgrounds, barbecue facilities, cafes, and public toilets are distributed throughout the foreshore precinct.

There is no entry fee or formal visitor centre; the lake is an open public space. Street parking is available around the full perimeter of the lake.
