The Loxton Historical Village on the Murray River bank recreates everyday life in the Riverland from the 1890s through to the 1950s. More than 45 fully furnished historic buildings spread across the riverside grounds, from a working blacksmith's shop and a one-teacher schoolhouse to an original homestead, a steam train and a collection of vintage farm machinery that powered the district's early agricultural economy.

Wandering the wide streets of the village feels genuinely immersive. Buildings have been relocated from across the region, restored and fitted out with period furniture, tools, clothing and domestic objects donated by local families. Volunteers in period dress guide groups through key buildings and explain the working and social lives of early settlers who cleared the mallee scrub and established irrigated orchards along the river.

A vintage steam train sits on a short loop of track that children can board, and a growing collection of early motor vehicles, horse-drawn wagons and farm implements is displayed in the machinery sheds. The village also hosts special Historical Alive Days several times a year, with horse-cart rides, market stalls, a parade and demonstrations.

The village is run largely by volunteers and sits directly beside the Murray, so a walk along the riverbank pairs naturally with a visit.
