Hidden valley at Kununurra's doorstep

Mirima National Park, known to locals as Hidden Valley, is a small but spectacular reserve just 2 km from Kununurra's town centre. The park protects ancient sandstone formations that closely resemble the Bungle Bungle Range, with layered red and orange rock fins, narrow gullies, and scattered spinifex rising above the surrounding plain. It is a place of deep cultural significance to the Miriwoong people, the Traditional Owners of the East Kimberley.
Four walking trails wind through the park, ranging from a gentle 400 m loop to a 3.5 km ridge walk with sweeping views over Kununurra and the Ord Valley. The formations date back more than 300 million years and were shaped by millions of years of erosion, creating a miniature version of the Kimberley's most famous rock landscapes within a few minutes' drive of town. Birdlife is prolific, and visitors can spot rainbow bee-eaters, red-tailed black cockatoos, and rock wallabies year-round.
The park is open throughout the year, though the wet season can make some trails slippery and the heat intense. Early morning and late afternoon visits are recommended both for cooler temperatures and for the warm golden light that makes the sandstone glow.
