Spanning 320 hectares on the upper Yorke Peninsula, Moonta Mines State Heritage Area preserves the remnants of Australia's richest copper mining operations, which ran from 1861 until 1923 and were largely worked by Cornish immigrants. Today visitors can tour the precinct by narrow-gauge tourist railway, visit the museum in the original 1878 Model School, and walk among engine houses, slag heaps, and miners' cottages.

The Moonta Mines Tourist Railway is the headline experience, a 50-minute guided ride that winds past ore sorting floors, the old reservoir, and through a tunnel in Ryans Tailings Heap. Knowledgeable volunteer drivers bring the landscape to life with stories of the men and families who built this remote community into one of the most productive mining sites in colonial Australia.

The museum inside the former Model School holds 14 themed rooms covering miners' dress, household life, a classroom furnished as it would have appeared around 1900, and the Cornish heritage that shaped the region's distinct culture. The Miner's Cottage and Heritage Garden, two engine houses, a blacksmithing forge, and the old School of Mines round out the wider heritage precinct.

The site is managed by National Trust SA volunteers and is listed on Australia's National Heritage register. The heritage area is about 165 kilometres north-west of Adelaide, near the town of Moonta.
