The Mount Oberon Summit Walk is the signature day walk of Wilsons Promontory National Park, climbing 558 metres above sea level to deliver sweeping 360-degree views across the coastline, offshore islands, and the park's forested interior. The 6.8-kilometre return trail begins at the Telegraph Saddle Carpark and suits fit walkers looking for a rewarding half-day challenge.
The track winds steadily uphill through tall eucalypts, passing timber bench seats positioned at intervals for rest stops. The final 100 metres to the summit involves a steep climb of granite and timber steps. From the top, on a clear day, you can identify Norman Bay, Whisky Bay, Picnic Bay, Leonard Bay, and the distant offshore islands including Rodondo Island.
Parks Victoria rates the walk as moderate to difficult. Granite boulders near the summit can be slippery when wet, and the cliff edges are unprotected, so walkers should stay on the marked trail. Solid footwear and water are essential. Allow two to three hours for the return walk.
During peak summer periods, the Mount Oberon Road is closed to private vehicles and a free shuttle bus runs between Tidal River and the Telegraph Saddle Carpark. Toilets are available at the carpark. Dogs are not permitted on the trail.
