National Anzac Centre
Where the ANZACs first sailed
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Perched on Mount Clarence overlooking King George Sound, the National Anzac Centre tells the story of the men and women who left Albany in November 1914 as the last port of call before the First World War. The immersive interpretive experience follows 32 individual characters through the conflict, making it one of Australia's most emotionally resonant war memorials.
Opened in November 2014 to mark the centenary of the ANZAC departure, the centre uses state-of-the-art displays, personal artefacts, and audio-visual storytelling to bring each character's journey to life. Visitors are issued a personal identity tag at entry and follow their character through the galleries before learning their fate at the end.
Beyond the main interpretive centre, the surrounding Albany Heritage Park is free to explore and includes the Princess Royal Fortress, war memorials, and sweeping views across the sound from which those first convoys departed. Military personnel in uniform enter free of charge, and holders of a Veterans Affairs card receive a 50 per cent discount.
