Holding one of the most significant art collections outside a capital city, the New England Regional Art Museum (NERAM) in Armidale houses over 4,500 works valued at more than 25 million dollars. Its centrepiece, the Howard Hinton Collection, spans Australian art from the 1880s to the 1940s and includes masterworks by Arthur Streeton, Tom Roberts, Margaret Preston, and Norman Lindsay.

NERAM opened in 1983 and now operates across six gallery spaces, presenting a mix of permanent displays and changing contemporary exhibitions. Alongside the Hinton bequest, the Chandler Coventry Collection brings together over 300 significant Australian works from the 1960s and 1970s, described at its time of acquisition as one of the most important collections of contemporary Australian art in the country.

The complex also contains a Museum of Printing based on a historic commercial printing collection, an artist residency studio, a research library, a gift shop, and a restaurant and cafe.

Entry to the galleries is by donation, making NERAM one of the most accessible major cultural institutions in regional New South Wales. The museum sits on Kentucky Street in the heart of Armidale, within easy walking distance of the city's heritage precinct.
