Spread across 17 hectares on the south shore of the Swan River, Perth Zoo has been delighting visitors since 1898. Home to more than 1,200 animals across African savannah, Asian rainforest and Australian bushwalk habitats, it combines conservation work with up-close wildlife encounters. The free ferry from Elizabeth Quay makes it one of Perth's most rewarding day trips for families.
Perth Zoo is renowned for its African Savannah precinct, where giraffes, zebras and lions roam expansive naturalistic settings. The Australian Bushwalk lets you stroll among kangaroos, wombats, dingoes and reptiles in a setting that celebrates local biodiversity, while the Asian Rainforest is home to Sumatran orangutans, gibbons and Asian elephants.
The zoo places strong emphasis on breeding programs for endangered species. Its orangutan conservation work is internationally recognised, and the on-site Native Species Breeding Program has contributed to the recovery of several threatened Western Australian animals.
A cafe, kiosk and picnic lawns make it easy to spend a full day here. The zoo is a short ferry ride across the Swan River from Elizabeth Quay, or accessible by bus from the city.
