Pichi Richi Railway, Quorn
Steam heritage through outback passes

The Pichi Richi Railway operates restored vintage steam and diesel trains through the dramatic Pichi Richi Pass between Quorn and Port Augusta, following part of the original Ghan route that once linked Adelaide to Alice Springs. Run by volunteers since 1973, the railway is one of Australia's most celebrated heritage rail operations and a living museum of the narrow-gauge rolling stock that served the outback for nearly a century.
The most popular service, the Pichi Richi Explorer, departs from Quorn and winds through the ranges to Woolshed Flat and back, with passengers able to take in the valley scenery from restored open-sided carriages. The Afghan Express operates the longer journey between Port Augusta and Quorn, tracing the old Ghan alignment through country that was once the lifeline for remote pastoral stations and Aboriginal communities.
The historic town of Quorn itself is worth exploring, with original 1870s stone buildings along Railway Terrace, the nearby Dutchman's Stern Conservation Park for walking, and several cafes and galleries in the main street. The town serves as a useful base for day trips into the southern Flinders Ranges.
Services run seasonally from June through November, with additional special-event departures around Father's Day and Labour Day. Booking in advance is strongly recommended as trains fill quickly during school holidays and long weekends.
