Sitting at the heart of Echuca's heritage precinct, the Port of Echuca Discovery Centre tells the story of Australia's remarkable inland river trade. Free to enter, the centre uses audiovisual displays and scale models to bring to life the era when the Murray River was the colony's busiest commercial highway, with Echuca briefly the second-largest port in Victoria.
The centre occupies the old port precinct on Murray Esplanade, where the original 1865 timber wharf still stretches along the riverbank. Listed on the Australian National Heritage List in 2007, the wharf was fully restored using locally milled red gum and stands as one of the finest surviving examples of a 19th-century river port in Australia.
Free guided tours depart twice daily, taking visitors through the wharf's deck levels, the historic bond store, and the working berths where paddle steamers still moor. The tours explain how wool, wheat, and timber flowed through this port to supply a growing colony, and how the river trade shaped the towns of both Echuca and Moama.
The precinct also serves as the ticketing hub for one-hour paddle steamer cruises, making it the natural first stop for any visit to Echuca's riverfront.
