PS Industry Paddle Steamer
Steam-powered Murray history
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Built in 1911 and once operated by SA Water to clear river snags and support lock construction, the PS Industry is the last surviving steam-powered government snag boat on the Murray. Lovingly restored by volunteers since 1990, she now offers 60-minute cruises from the Renmark riverfront, letting passengers feel the warmth of the wood-fired boiler and watch the great paddle wheels churn the river.
The PS Industry is moored behind the Renmark Paringa Visitor Information Centre on Murray Avenue, right in the heart of the Renmark riverfront precinct. Open for static inspection most days, visitors can step aboard at no cost and explore the vessel at their own pace, taking in historical photographs, memorabilia and the remarkable engineering of a working steam engine that dates back over a century.
Cruises run on most long-weekend Sundays, during school holidays and on the first Sunday of selected months. The one-hour upstream journey hugs the river red gums and open water channels that define this stretch of the Murray, with commentary on the vessel's colourful past, including its standby role during the record 1956 flood when Renmark faced possible evacuation.
The PS Industry is operated entirely by a dedicated volunteer crew. Bookings are made through the Renmark Paringa Visitor Information Centre, and group charters can be arranged for private occasions.
