RFDS Outback Heritage Experience

Opened in 2025 within the working Royal Flying Doctor Service base at Broken Hill Airport, this newly built immersive museum takes visitors through more than nine decades of aerial medicine across remote Australia. The facility is one of the only working RFDS bases open to the public daily, giving guests a rare look at aircraft, medical equipment and the people who deliver the mantle of safety across the outback.
The experience is built around storytelling, combining interactive displays, personal accounts from outback families and a theatre screening original documentary films. Exhibits trace the RFDS from its 1928 founding under the Reverend John Flynn through to modern operations that cover millions of square kilometres and treat hundreds of thousands of patients each year.
Visitors can walk through the hangar to view operational aircraft up close and explore the Mantle of Safety Museum, which houses original instruments, radios and medical kits. Staff explain how a base call transforms into an emergency aeromedical retrieval, giving real context to the logistics of remote-area healthcare.
All proceeds from admission and merchandise sales are reinvested into new aircraft and vital medical equipment, so a ticket to the experience directly supports the service's ongoing work.
