Sovereign Hill is Australia's premier open-air museum, recreating Ballarat's 1850s gold-rush township on the very ground where the original diggings took place. Visitors can pan for gold, ride in a horse-drawn carriage, explore underground mine shafts, and watch costumed characters go about their daily colonial lives across a sprawling 25-hectare site that draws families and history lovers from around the world.

The museum opened in 1970 and has grown into one of Victoria's most visited attractions. Its main street is lined with working businesses, including a confectionery shop, bakery, and blacksmith, all staffed by interpreters in period dress. Underground mine tours take guests deep into a replica gold mine to understand the gruelling conditions endured by diggers who flooded Ballarat after gold was discovered in 1851.

Beyond the core township, the adjacent Gold Museum tells the broader story of gold in Australian life, from the rush era through to the present day. The evening sound-and-light show AURA transforms the main street into a spectacular historical spectacle after dark, available separately. Sovereign Hill also holds school holiday programs, weekend events, and seasonal experiences throughout the year.

The site sits within the suburb of Golden Point, a short drive from Ballarat's CBD. Pre-booking is recommended, particularly during school holidays and public holiday periods when crowd numbers are highest.
