Surfers Point at Prevelly is the beating heart of Margaret River surfing, hosting the annual World Surf League Championship Tour event on its powerful reef break. Tiered grassy banks above the water serve as natural grandstand seating, making it just as rewarding for spectators as for surfers. A short beach walk north leads to the river mouth, where the amber-tinted Margaret River spills into the Indian Ocean.
Even visitors with no interest in surfing find the point magnetic. Powerful Southern Ocean swells stack up against the limestone reef below the viewing banks, and the drama of watching experienced surfers navigate the break is compelling. The grassy terraces fill with families on summer evenings, often joined by a mobile food truck, and the sunset view across the ocean is among the finest in the region.
From the main car park, a sandy track winds north along the beach toward the river mouth, a quieter and wilder stretch where the Margaret River pushes through low scrub before merging with the sea. Birdlife is plentiful along the riverbank, and the contrast between the calm, tea-coloured river and the churning surf a few metres away is striking.
Swimming at Surfers Point itself is not recommended due to hazardous reef and rip conditions. The beach walk toward the mouth is gentle and accessible, and early morning visits reward walkers with solitude and a good chance of spotting dolphins.
