Spread across 300 hectares of open grassland outside Dubbo, Taronga Western Plains Zoo is one of Australia's great wildlife experiences. More than 1,000 animals from over 40 species roam expansive naturalistic habitats separated from visitors by concealed moats, creating the feeling of being alongside lions, elephants, giraffes and rhinoceroses in the wild rather than behind bars.
Opened in 1977 as the first new zoo built in Australia in six decades, the zoo was designed from the outset as an open-range facility where large animals could be kept in conditions closer to their natural environment. Visitors explore the circuit on foot, by hire bike, or by pedal boat around the internal lake, with keeper talks and activities running daily.
Conservation breeding is central to the zoo's mission. The facility has played a significant role in programs for greater one-horned rhinoceroses, African elephants, and several endangered native Australian species. A stay in the on-site safari lodges lets guests fall asleep and wake to the sounds of the animal collection just metres away.
Admission is valid for two consecutive days, giving visitors ample time to cover the full circuit at a relaxed pace. The zoo is open every day of the year.
