Pennicott Wilderness Journeys runs a three-hour small-boat cruise along the coastline of Tasman National Park, between Port Arthur and the remote tip of Cape Pillar. The journey takes passengers close to some of the highest vertical sea cliffs in the Southern Hemisphere, through sea caves, past waterfalls tumbling directly into the ocean, and into the territory of seals, dolphins, sea eagles, albatross and, in season, migrating whales.
The cruise operates in custom-built yellow vessels that can manoeuvre into narrow gullies and sea caves inaccessible to larger boats. The route passes landmark formations including Cathedral Rock, the Totem Pole, a slender dolerite column known to rock climbers worldwide, and the Candlestick, as well as the towering dolerite columns of Cape Pillar.
Morning cruises depart year-round from the booking centre on the Arthur Highway in Port Arthur, with an afternoon cruise also operating in the warmer months. The experience is best on calm days; guides are very knowledgeable about local geology, ecology and wildlife.
Passengers should dress warmly regardless of the season, as the Southern Ocean generates a sharp wind chill even in summer, and water-resistant jackets are advisable. Life jackets and safety equipment are provided.
