Perched 113 metres above sea level at the back of Lorne, Teddy's Lookout delivers one of the most sweeping panoramas on the entire Great Ocean Road. Visitors look out over the St George River mouth, the curl of the bay, and the deep blue of the Southern Ocean, with the ribbon of coastal road visible far below. The lookout is free, just a short drive from Lorne's main street, and open around the clock.
The site was named during construction of the Great Ocean Road, when a contractor named Ted Babington and his drivers would rest their horses here while hauling timber for bridge works. The vantage point has since become one of the road's most-photographed stops, especially at sunrise and sunset when the light turns the ocean shades of copper and gold.
A small car park sits at the top of George Street, and short bush tracks wind through the surrounding vegetation for those who want to extend the visit. There are no amenities at the lookout itself, but Lorne is only two kilometres away and offers a wide range of cafes, bakeries, and restaurants. The lookout is equally rewarding in stormy weather, when the Southern Ocean puts on a dramatic show below.
