Tidal River is the main visitor hub of Wilsons Promontory National Park, sitting about three hours south-east of Melbourne. It brings together a campground with nearly 500 sites, a visitor centre staffed by knowledgeable rangers, a general store, and direct access to Norman Beach, making it the natural base for any visit to the Prom, whether for a single day or a week-long stay.
The visitor centre is open daily and provides maps, permits for overnight hikes, wildlife-spotting tips, and information on current track conditions. Rangers run guided activities during school holidays, and all-terrain wheelchairs and TrailRiders are available free of charge for visitors with mobility limitations.
The township itself sits beside the Tidal River estuary, where the calm tidal waters attract wading birds, and wombats and kangaroos are regularly seen grazing around the campsites at dusk. The general store stocks daily essentials alongside takeaway meals.
From Tidal River you can walk to Norman Beach in minutes, drive to the Telegraph Saddle Carpark for the Mount Oberon summit walk, or set out on the southern circuit overnight hikes. There is no fuel or electric vehicle charging at Tidal River, so visitors should plan their supplies before entering the park.
