Eucalypt Forest Koala Path
Spot koalas in tall forest
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
The Eucalypt Forest at Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve is a 17-hectare wet sclerophyll forest enclosed within a predator-proof fence, home to free-ranging koalas whose lineage traces back to the reserve's first breeding programme begun in 1939. A dedicated viewing area near the start of the 700-metre Koala Path offers reliable close-up views of these marsupials before the path meanders deeper into towering gums where long-nosed potoroos and wallabies also roam. A longer 1.8-kilometre Peppermint Trail extends the experience for those wanting a more immersive forest walk.
Tidbinbilla's koala population is one of the most accessible in the Australian Capital Territory, and the upgraded predator-proof enclosure, completed in 2020, provides a safe, naturalistic setting for the animals to breed and move freely. The Koala Path is rated Grade 2 and is largely flat and even with no steps, making it suitable for families with young children and visitors using wheelchairs, though some sections may require assistance.
The surrounding forest is a classic snow gum and peppermint gum woodland that also shelters a range of native birds. Guided ranger walks are occasionally offered during school holiday periods. The Eucalypt Forest Carpark is the starting point for the walk and is signed clearly from the main reserve road.
