Tingkkarli / Lake Mary Ann

Tingkkarli was constructed between 1977 and 1980 to supply water to Tennant Creek, and is named in connection with the Mary Ann Mine located to the north. The Warumungu people are the traditional custodians of the land on which the lake sits, and they welcome visitors who observe cultural protocols during their visit. The combination of still water, grassed banks and native bushland makes for an unexpectedly tranquil stop after long kilometres on the Stuart Highway.

Activities at the lake include swimming at visitors' own risk, canoeing and paddling, picnicking under shaded shelters, and walking the trail that circuits the water's edge. Leashed dogs are welcome. Facilities include barbecues, shaded picnic areas, a car park and coach parking, and public toilets, making it well-suited to both families and touring groups. The Ted Ryko Cycle Track connects the lake to central Tennant Creek, offering an enjoyable car-free approach for those keen to stretch their legs.

The site is a day-use area only; no overnight camping is permitted, and the area closes after dark. Entry is free. The lake can be reached from the Stuart Highway north of Tennant Creek via Mary Ann Drive. It sits comfortably alongside a visit to the nearby Kunjarra / The Pebbles and the Telegraph Station, making for a satisfying half-day loop from town.
