WA Museum Boola Bardip
Millions of years, one building
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
WA Museum Boola Bardip, meaning many stories in Whadjuk Noongar language, reopened in 2020 in a bold new building that wraps around the original 1891 museum on the Perth Cultural Centre. Across six floors, the museum tells the natural, cultural and human stories of Western Australia through immersive galleries, a blue whale skeleton, and an extraordinary collection of more than four million objects.
The Being Western Australian gallery anchors the permanent collection with stories about the State's people, landscapes and communities from First Nations culture through to the present day. The Discovering Western Australia floor covers the continent's geology, flora and fauna, while the maritime heritage galleries trace the dramatic history of Dutch and British wrecks along the WA coast.
A headline attraction is Otto the Blue Whale, a fully articulated 25-metre skeleton displayed in the atrium with an original score by the Perth Symphony Orchestra. Rotating special exhibitions add depth, with interactive displays exploring ocean conservation and deep-sea exploration.
The museum is wheelchair accessible throughout and includes a cafe, museum shop, and free Wi-Fi. Children aged 15 and under enter free of charge.
