Walkabout Wildlife Sanctuary
Native wildlife, free to roam
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Set on a heritage-listed Aboriginal cultural landscape at Calga in the hills above the Central Coast, Walkabout Wildlife Sanctuary gives visitors the freedom to wander through open bushland alongside kangaroos, wombats, Tasmanian devils, dingoes and koalas. Unlike a traditional zoo, the animals move freely through the property and interactions happen on the animals' own terms.
The sanctuary was founded on land with Aboriginal cultural sites dating back more than 4,000 years, and that heritage is woven into the visitor experience. Daily ranger-led talks cover native wildlife behaviour and conservation, while animal encounter sessions allow close meetings under the guidance of experienced keepers. A Ranger for a Day program suits wildlife enthusiasts who want a more immersive behind-the-scenes experience.
The park also runs night spotlighting tours for visitors wanting to observe nocturnal species after dark, and cabin and camping accommodation is available for those who want to stay overnight. Children are well catered for through school holiday programs and birthday party packages. The sanctuary is about 20 minutes west of Gosford and is open daily except Christmas Day.
