Wallaroo Heritage and Nautical Museum
Copper Coast maritime history
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Housed in Wallaroo's 1865 limestone post office building, the oldest in the town, this National Trust museum tells the story of the Copper Coast through exhibits spanning the copper smelting era, maritime trade, postal history, and local community life. Its most remarkable resident is George the Giant Squid, a deep-sea specimen preserved in formalin with tentacles extending some nine metres.
The maritime wing holds a 30-foot racing boat, navigation instruments, and artefacts from the ships that once carried copper ingots from Wallaroo's busy smelter wharf to markets around the world. Display cases cover the 1861 to 1923 smelting era in detail, with photographs, equipment, and personal objects donated by local families.
Other highlights include the 1910 Wallaroo Waterside Workers Federation banner and artefacts connected to Titanic survivor Evelyn Marsden, who later made her home in Wallaroo. The museum also offers ghost walks, heritage trail maps, and assistance with genealogical research for those tracing Copper Coast family histories.
The museum is a short walk from Wallaroo's Owen Terrace shops and overlooks Investigator Park, which contains a replica lighthouse. Wheelchair access, parking, and a gift shop are all available on site.
