Tucked into the northern lee of Cape Byron headland, Wategos Beach is a compact crescent of pale sand sheltered from the prevailing southerly swell. The beach sits within Walgun Cape Byron State Conservation Area and is accessible on foot from the lighthouse precinct or from the small Marine Parade carpark, making it a favourite with families, longboarders and anyone wanting a quieter alternative to the main town beaches.
Wategos earned its name from Mick Watego, who leased the land above the beach in 1933 and grew fruit and vegetables there with his family. Today the beach is edged by a grassy picnic reserve with free gas barbecues, picnic tables, cold showers and accessible toilet facilities. Bottlenose dolphins often ride the gentle waves just metres from shore, and the clear water makes for good snorkelling on calm days.
The surf at Wategos breaks over a wide sand bar and patches of reef, producing long, mellow waves that suit longboards and beginner surfers. The beach is unpatrolled, so swimmers should check conditions before entering. Rock fishing is also popular along the headland edges at either end of the beach.
Wategos sits on the Walgun Cape Byron walking track, making it a natural rest stop on the full lighthouse circuit. Drones, pets and smoking are all prohibited within the reserve.
