Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix

The opening round of the Formula 1 season, held at Albert Park in Melbourne.

The Formula 1 season opens at Albert Park in Melbourne over four days of practice, qualifying and race day in mid-March.

The Australian Grand Prix is traditionally the opening round of the Formula 1 world championship and has been held at Albert Park in Melbourne continuously since 1996 (with breaks in 2020 and 2021). The four day event runs from Thursday to Sunday in mid-March and attracts over 400,000 spectators, making it one of the best-attended sports events in the country.

The Albert Park circuit is a street circuit that is set up and dismantled around the Albert Park Lake every year. It runs through the park grounds and the adjacent streets and is considered one of the faster tracks on the F1 calendar. The race itself runs on the Sunday afternoon.

The weekend programme also includes supporting races (Porsche Carrera Cup, S5000, Supercars and others) plus extensive off-track entertainment including air shows, live music and aftermovie zones. Accommodation near Albert Park spikes significantly for the weekend.
