Set on a sweeping bend of the Murray River near Kingston on Murray, Banrock Station blends winemaking with one of Australia's most important wetland conservation projects. The 4,200-hectare property encompasses restored lagoons, mallee woodland and floodplain listed under the Ramsar Convention in 2002, making it one of the few places in the world where a working vineyard sits beside internationally recognised wetlands.

Visitors can sample estate wines at the cellar door and dine at the restaurant, which looks out over the lagoons through large windows designed to frame the natural landscape. Self-guided walking trails wind through the restored wetlands, with bird-viewing hides and story centres explaining the ecology of the floodplain and the restoration work that transformed degraded land back into thriving habitat.

The short wetlands walk covers 2.5 kilometres and takes roughly one hour, while a longer circuit of 4.5 kilometres takes around two hours. Rangers work alongside the vineyard team to manage water flows and protect breeding habitat across the property.

Banrock Station donates a portion of wine sales to conservation projects in Australia and around the world. The combination of cellar door, wildlife walks and wetland boardwalk makes it a rewarding half-day stop.
