The Northern Territory's tropical capital and the closest Australian city to South-East Asia. Two seasons (wet and dry), excellent street food markets, and the gateway to Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks.
Darwin sits on Larrakia country at the top of the Northern Territory, three hours north of Bali by air. The city was almost completely rebuilt after Cyclone Tracy levelled it on Christmas Eve 1974, and the modern centre is a low-rise mix of offices, hotels and waterfront apartments.
The Mindil Beach Sunset Markets run twice a week through the dry season and are the easiest way into Darwin's Asian-Australian food culture. The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory is one of the country's best regional museums, with strong Aboriginal collections and a dedicated Cyclone Tracy room.
The city is the launch point for Kakadu (three hours east), Litchfield (90 minutes south), and the Tiwi Islands offshore. The dry season from May to October is the only sensible time to visit. The wet brings 90 percent humidity and afternoon thunderstorms, but also full waterfalls and birdlife.
