Grandvewe Cheeses
Sheep cheese on the Channel coast
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Perched on a hillside above the D'Entrecasteaux Channel at Birchs Bay, Grandvewe is Australia's most awarded sheep dairy, producing a range of hard and soft cheeses, sheep milk yoghurt, and spirits through its on-farm Hartshorn Distillery. The Tasting House overlooks Bruny Island and offers one of the most scenic foodie stops in southern Tasmania.
Visitors can drop in for the Tasting Teaser, a guided plate of cheeses and accompaniments led by a knowledgeable Tasting House team member, or book into longer experiences including traditional butter-making, gin mixology workshops, or a full farm and production tour. The atmosphere is unhurried and genuinely educational, with guides explaining the animals, the milk, and the craft behind each product on the table.
Grandvewe sits about 40 minutes south of Hobart and pairs naturally with a drive to Kettering and the Bruny Island ferry. The on-site shop stocks the full cheese and spirit range for purchase to take home. Private group bookings are available on days when the Tasting House is otherwise closed.
