Kunjarra / The Pebbles

The granite formations at Kunjarra were shaped by the same ancient geological processes as Karlu Karlu, through erosion and exfoliation of a vast granite intrusion over hundreds of millions of years. The result is a cluster of rounded, moss-tinged boulders nestled in low scrubland, with interpretive signage on-site explaining both the Warumungu cultural significance and the geological story behind the formations. A walking track winds through and around the site.

Kunjarra is a day-use area only; overnight camping is strictly prohibited. Visitors are asked to remain on the walking track and not to cross the fence line around the sacred core of the site, in line with Warumungu cultural protocols. Facilities include a shaded picnic shelter, barbecue and a car park. There are currently no toilet facilities on-site, so visitors should plan accordingly before making the drive in from the highway.

The turnoff to Kunjarra is located just past the Tennant Creek Telegraph Station on the left when travelling north from Tennant Creek. The unsealed access road is generally suitable for conventional two-wheel-drive vehicles in dry conditions. Entry is free. The site is managed by the Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife Commission in partnership with Warumungu traditional owners.
