Pooley Wines has been producing wine from its Coal River Valley vineyards since 1985 and is now regarded as one of Tasmania's benchmark estates, having been named Halliday Winery of the Year 2023. The cellar door occupies The Coach House, a heritage building nestled between Belmont, a Georgian convict-built, heritage-listed homestead, and the vines of the Butcher's Hill vineyard. Tastings are available seven days a week, with bookings essential.
The estate specialises in pinot noir, chardonnay, and riesling drawn from two distinct vineyard sites: Butcher's Hill adjoining the cellar door and the cooler Cooinda Vale block higher in the valley. Structured, in-depth tastings are led by knowledgeable staff and are accompanied by cheese and charcuterie boards prepared daily. On Fridays through Sundays, artisan wood-fired pizzas are served from 12pm to 3pm, turning the cellar door into a relaxed lunch destination.
Pooley is Tasmania's only fully accredited environmentally certified sustainable vineyard and carries that commitment through every aspect of the operation. The surrounding landscape, rolling vineyards, the Georgian homestead, and the backdrop of the Coal River Valley, makes this one of the most scenic cellar-door experiences in the state. Luxury accommodation is available at Prospect Country House next door, and Buscombe's Restaurant is located across the road for those wishing to extend their visit.
