Redbank Gorge
A remote chasm for the adventurous

Redbank Gorge is the most remote and dramatic slot canyon in Tjoritja / West MacDonnell National Park, nestled at the foot of Mount Sonder 156 kilometres west of Alice Springs. The gorge narrows to just a few metres wide, its dark walls channelling a near-permanent waterhole that visitors wade or float through in flotation devices. Access requires a high-clearance 4WD vehicle, which keeps the site refreshingly uncrowded even in peak season.
The walk from the carpark follows a dry creek bed for 1 kilometre before reaching the waterhole, a 1.5-hour return journey that rewards with one of the most atmospheric gorge experiences in the Red Centre. Those with time and fitness can continue past the gorge on the Larapinta Trail to climb Mount Sonder, a challenging overnight return walk that is considered among the finest in outback Australia, with panoramic views stretching across the ranges at sunrise.
Two campgrounds, the Ridgetop and the Woodland, offer basic facilities including toilets, fire pits, and picnic tables, with caravans permitted only at the Woodland site. All bookings and payments must be made online before departure from Alice Springs, as there is no on-site payment facility and no mobile phone coverage in the area. Visitors should carry ample water, food, and a first-aid kit, and ensure their 4WD is in sound mechanical condition before making the journey.
