Sacred Canyon (Yura Mulka)

The short walk into the canyon follows a dry creek bed lined with river red gums before the ochre-coloured walls close in and the engravings come into view. Fifteen major engraving panels have been documented, and Adnyamathanha guides explain the spiritual and practical significance of each motif, connecting visitors to a living cultural tradition.

The guided experience is bookable through Wilpena Pound Resort. Tours are intimate and unhurried, giving participants ample time to absorb the atmosphere of the canyon and ask questions of their guide. The restriction on independent access reflects the sacred nature of the site and helps protect the engravings from physical damage.

A standard national parks vehicle entry pass covers the drive to the trailhead. Visitors should bring water and sun protection, as the access road is unsealed and the gorge itself can be warm even in winter.
