St John the Evangelist Catholic Church

Inside, the church is beautifully preserved, soaring timber ceilings, original box pews, hand-painted Stations of the Cross, and richly detailed stained-glass windows create a contemplative atmosphere that has changed little in nearly two centuries. The surrounding cemetery contains some of Tasmania's oldest surviving headstones, and the adjacent heritage school building adds further historical context. Together, the precinct offers a quietly moving encounter with colonial faith and community.

The church remains an active parish of the Archdiocese of Hobart, so visitors are welcome to explore between services. The grounds and garden are open at all times and provide lovely framing for photography. St John's is a short, level walk from Richmond Bridge, Old Hobart Town, and the gaol, making it a natural part of any self-guided walking tour of the village.
