The Ship That Never Was
True convict escape, live theatre
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
Performed nightly at the open-air Richard Davey Amphitheatre on Strahan's Esplanade, The Ship That Never Was is a live professional theatre production. It tells the true and stranger-than-fiction story of the 1834 convict escape from the brutal Sarah Island penal settlement, when prisoners secretly built a brig and sailed it out through Hells Gates.
The production blends slapstick comedy, audience participation and genuine historical drama to make the story accessible to all ages. Audience members are regularly recruited from the crowd to play parts, which keeps even repeat visitors entertained. The performance runs approximately one hour and 15 minutes and is covered against rain, though the venue is open-air and visitors should dress warmly.
Ticket sales begin in the late afternoon at the amphitheatre box office, and the show starts in the early evening. The season runs from September to May each year, with select performances in June and July. Bookings are recommended as the venue has limited capacity. Companion Card holders are welcome and a companion attends free of charge.
The amphitheatre is adjacent to the West Coast Visitor Information Centre on The Esplanade, within easy walking distance of all Strahan accommodation and restaurants.
