Kings Creek Walk
Easy canyon floor stroll
schedule 1 min read / Updated Jun 2026
The Kings Creek Walk is a short, accessible 2.6 km return trail that follows the sandy bed of Kings Creek deep into the base of Kings Canyon. Suitable for families and visitors of all fitness levels, it ends at a viewing platform where sheer canyon walls tower hundreds of metres overhead. A NT Parks Visitor Pass is required for entry.
Starting from the same car park as the Rim Walk, this gentle Grade 2 trail is marked with red indicators and meanders along the creek floor through a corridor of ancient sandstone cliffs. The gradual incline makes it an easy walk for children and those who prefer a less strenuous experience, yet the views looking upward at the canyon walls are no less dramatic than those from the rim.
The walk ends at a sturdy timber viewing platform positioned where the canyon narrows, giving a striking perspective of the sheer red walls and the sky-blue strip above. Walkers return by the same track, so it is also suitable for prams and mobility aids on the lower sections. Allow around one hour return at a relaxed pace.
Heat management applies across Watarrka National Park: access may be restricted between September and March during extreme heat periods. Water and toilet facilities are available at the car park.
